The 2016 NAMM show took place over the weekend of January 21st thru the 24th, 2016 at the Anaheim Convention Center. NAMM is the trade show for music and instruments and it is not open to the general public. Every year NAMM attracts musicians, buyers, celebrities and media from all over the world to see new musical instruments and trade. This year METAL SHOP was invited to attend two days of the convention
On Friday, the show seemed more subdued and quiet than in the past years. I remember our second year at NAMM several years ago, the Friday crowd was huge and every line we waited in for a meet and greet seemed to take forever. That was not the case this year as I noticed a small line waiting for a meet and greet with Iron Maiden Drummer Nicko McBrain at the Sonor drum booth. Fans of Maiden and Nicko were very happy the lines were small and they had time to go do other meet and greets.
Other musicians spotted on Friday were John 5 (Rob Zombie), Rex Brown (Pantera), Chris Broderick (Ex-Megadeth and now with Act of Defiance), and Phil Anselmo (former Pantera), who seemed to greet everyone with a big smile and took photos with all his fans.
On Saturday the show was more alive and jumping. Arriving after 3pm, I was able to catch the final Meet and Greet with Mötley Crüe Bassist Nikki Sixx at Black Star Amps, where he was actually representing with his other band SIXX AM.
Other musicians spotted on Saturday included Rudy Sarzo (former Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne), Guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen, Doyle Von Frankenstein (Misfits) and Vic Rattlehead (Megadeth Mascot). It was great to see manufacturers like Ernie Ball Guitar Strings, Sonor Drums who has recently endorsed Nicko McBrian and his new drum set, and Marshall Amps, who every year have the biggest wall of amps.

Philip Anselmo (PANTERA), Dave Grohl (FOO FIGHTERS), Robert Trujillo (METALLICA) and Dave Lombardo (former SLAYER) were all part of the all-star jam at the annual Dimebash charity event to raise money for the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund, held this year at Lucky Strike Bowling Lanes in Hollywood, California on January 22, 2016.
The show started of with local Long Beach band Revolution Mother, who were very impressive and got the crowd warmed up for what was to come. Next to perform was Nick Bowcott, who was a great friend of deceased Pantera guitarist, Dimebag Darrell Abbott. Nick kicked ass on some Pantera cuts and had the crowd starting a rowdy mosh pit, complete with drinks flying from unsuspecting fans to the front of the stage.
More special guests took the stage, including John Bush (Armored Saint), Doug Pinnick (Kings X), Mikkey Dee (MOTORHEAD), and Gilby Clarke (former GUNS ‘N ROSES).
Special thanks to Natania Reed for making this shappen for METAL SHOP… YOU ROCK! -Ralph
